Emmis: Q3 revenue down 4%
For the third fiscal quarter, Emmis reports total net revenue of $85.1 million, compared to $90.6 million for the same quarter of the prior year, a decline of 6%. Radio revenue was $62.28 million, down 4% year-to-year. Emmis Chairman and CEO Jeff Smulyan said. "I am confident that we are well-positioned for this downturn." Emmis shares closed up 8% Thursday to 39 cents.
Bonuses, higher commissions scarce.
If you didn’t get a bonus for 2008, you had plenty of company. More than two-thirds of respondents to an Inside Radio survey say they didn’t get one. In addition to bonuses, commission hikes are also harder to find. Just 9% of our readers say their station’s sales commission rates went up last year. More than twice as many say they declined.
Katz Media launches marketing unit.
Katz Marketing Solutions is a new unit to be led by Clear Channel Radio Sales national president Bob McCurdy. It will go after multi-platform deals giving radio a larger piece of advertiser budgets. The restructuring gives national sales duties to Bonnie Press-led Katz Advantage. Meanwhile, the rep firm announced 122 layoffs on Thursday, while other employees get new roles.
Survey: Online dollars seen as key.
Nearly two-thirds (64%) respondents to an Inside Radio readers' survey say a focus on making money online would help their station more than anything else this year. The second-biggest suggestion is staying with local talent and cutting syndication and voicetracking. More in today's Inside Radio.
Year of change in Congress too.
Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA) will take over the subcommittee with FCC and media oversight. Boucher’s radio issues record is mixed. He co-sponsored 1996’s Telecom Act, but voted in favor of boosting indecency fines in June 2006. He was also among the biggest advocates for allowing Sirius and XM Radio to merge.
SBS gives "El Chulo" TV simulcast.
Joaquin Garza, host of Spanish Broadcasting System's “El Chulo de la Mañana” show will be simulcast on sister Mega TV starting Monday. The KLAX, L.A.-based show is the highest-profile SBS radio product to get a national platform on Mega TV, which is distributed nationally by DirecTV.
Tom Kent teams with ABC Radio.
Three weeks from Monday is when veteran programmer and air personality Tom Kent will join ABC Radio Networks’ lineup. His self-titled network has 100 affiliates and consists three oldies shows. ABC recently ended its longtime relationship with oldies personality Dick Bartley.
Bill O’Reilly stays with radio.
The Fox News Channel’s top-rated personality commits to continue his “Radio Talking Points” feature which ranges from politics to current events. Starting March 2, it doubles to twice a day -- for morning and afternoon drive. It allowsWestwood One to keep one of its top draws with advertisers.
