TIME TO RID THE FALL MERCHANDISE! The season is nearing an end -on the racks only, certainly the blustery weather today reminds us that we are right in the thick of winter. The holiday shopping season has concluded and whatever is left on the shelves and racks from fall collections needs to go to clear room for next season. Yes, already! But this Built By Wendy sale will put a little 'spring' in your step considering you will get up to 50% off clothing from their fall collection. It's going on now with no end date set. 7 Centre Market Pl at Grand St and 46 North 6th St between Kent and Wythe Aves, Williamsburg.Write Comment (0 comments) FIRST SALES OF '08 One of the first good sales of the year comes from Jill Stuart where you will find considerable price reductions on the designer's fall collection of tops, skirts and pants for $50-95. Dresses are priced $100-150 and jackets are $130 while shoes and bags are 50% off. Now through the end of the month. Mon—Sat 11am—7pm; Sun noon—6pm. 100 Greene St between Houston and Prince Sts. Write Comment (0 comments) MORE PAPERED WINDOWS -IN DOWNTOWN MANHATTAN Although Rafe was a loved store for handbags that will be very missed, the space at the corner of Bowery and Bleecker is set to be the newest outpost of independent caffeine pushers Think Coffee. They are known for their perfectly strong cold-brewed iced coffees in the summers and warm comforting cappucinos in the winter. The space is currently under construction and work permits indicate just basic renovations. The scheduled opening is for March and it will certainly do well on that corner in the center of the renewed Bowery. Write Comment (0 comments) URBAN OUTPOST ON ATLANTIC AVE. BROOKLYN Another large, corporate retailer that naturally melds with the environment and style of Brooklyn is Urban Outfitters. Taking advantage of the old and beautiful Sail Makers building (at 164 Atlantic Avenue between Court and Clinton Streets) in Cobble Hill Brooklyn, will be the latest UO to NYC. Just like the A.P.C. store, as of a few days ago this soon-to-be store had paper over its windows but at least had signage up as you can see in this very recent photo. Another perfect melding of retail and Brooklyn -a very happy couple indeed. Write Comment (0 comments) A.P.C. SURPLUS TO HIT WILLIAMSBURG This dark building is what we've been stalkingI have never been shy about how much I heart A.P.C. Well, soon A.P.C.'s new outlet, A.P.C. Surplus, will hit 33 Grand Street near Kent Avenue in Williamsburg. It will be close to super cool shops Sprout Home and Moon River Chattel as well as the delectible Italian eatery Aurora -which I dined at just a few weeks ago and enjoyed lovely comfort dishes. We will soon be able to add to our Williamsburg waterfront crawl this long-awaited shop that will specialize in vintage military items, discounted pieces from previous seasons and their signature denim. The only thing we are unsure of is the exact opening date but this past weekend the windows were covered with paper and we could not see inside. We do know that the structure is three floors -whether all three will be dedicated to our insatiable shopping is unknown but A.P.C tends to keep things spacious and airy so perhaps. The staff is saying mid-January and inside industry rumors peg January 11th as the exact date. This is another one we will keep informed about.Write Comment (0 comments) KORRES COMING SOON TO BROOKLYN HEIGHTS Another addition to the Brooklyn retail-scape is Korres Natural Products. This is a coveted beauty line previously available to us New Yorkers at Henri Bendel, Flight 001, Whole Foods and Sephora but was in such high demand, they opened thier first boutique in Soho at 110 Wooster Street this past August. The second New York outpost is set to open on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights, however, we were expecting it in September and it is still not open as of today. What we do have is the below photo telling us 'soon'. We will let you know if we get confirmation on the doors opening. This Greek line of green-friendly products will be a great addition to this neighborhood and will surely flourish.Write Comment (0 comments) SOON TO BE IN NYC 2008 is set to bring many new stores for our shopping pleasure. One area of focus for business owners, large and small, appears to be Brooklyn. We keep getting tips about new (and fabulous) retail outlets preparing to set stage in the not-that-far-behind-Manhattan borough. One inescapable section of Brooklyn for new retail spaces this past year was Red Hook. And the biggest (literally) retail addition will be the Ikea which will open its doors this spring. Ikea is such a phenom in NYC -just about every downtown flat has at least one thing from Ikea, whether a funky watering can or a bookshelf. The days of having to rent a car to get to Elizabeth, NJ will be gone once we can hop on the subway and hit our fave Scandinavian-designed housewares outlet in Red Hook, Brooklyn. During the party they threw back in August, in celebration of their then-new catalog, their latest colorful furniture was placed throughout the space further tempting our desires...especially for a specific opening date which all of the staffers collectively kept to 'Spring of '08'. Will this be another Apple Store in the Meatpacking type of opening with free giveaways??? You're downtown darlings will certainly keep you afoot of all developments as we learn more... Write Comment (0 comments) NEW YEAR BBLESSINGS The gracious and always lovely men of Bblessing mens boutique are drinking a homemade concoction to cure the ultimate hangover and dragging themselves to open up shop today from 2pm-7pm. Their previously mentioned sale is still going on so do stop by as you know you will be doing nothing else productive today! Write Comment (0 comments) ART + FASHION = ALWAYS A SUCCESS Besides peanut butter and chocolate, there is no better collaboration than grafitti and military when it comes to mens fashion. As for artist and fashion designer partnerships, the concept is absolutely nothing new, but the line Distilled is very new. Founded by Matty Merrill, formerly a designer at Triple 5 Soul, his mission with his line was to collaborate from phase one with artists on his concept pieces such as the Adam5-100, pictured here. Named after the Oakland-based graffiti artist with whom Merrill collaborated, it's in the details that this becomes more of a statement than another re-interpretation of an old concept. Classic form meets useful function in this winter coat made of Melton wool which is used in military garb to retain warmth while reflecting water. There's an accessible interior pocket inspired by the artists need to have a concealed place for spray cans and stencil rolls -translated to the general public = Iphone and party flyers. Adam5-100's trademark screen-printing work is on the inner lining for more personalized detailing along with a leather headphone eyelet for easy ear-bud access. We look forward to seeing more from the label Distilled. Write Comment (0 comments) BOND NO. 9 PARTNERS WITH WARHOL FOUNDATION...AGAIN Bond No. 9 will be introducing us with its second Warhol-inspired fragrance called Andy Warhol Union Square. For those unaware, Warhol originally bought a townhouse further uptown for him and his mother to live in when he was working for publications like Vogue. Then, when he was able to do his own thing, he moved further downtown to a space on Union Square -this is where he survived getting shot. The latest fragrance will be encased in 10 different bottles, each based on a design from Warhol's "Flowers". Hard-core Warhol fanatics will be able to purchase the entire collection of 10 100-ml. bottles for $1,500 in a special box encasing. Obviously you can also purchase a single bottle for $195 for a 100-ml. or $135 for a 50-ml. bottle. It is set to launch in March at Bond No. 9 boutiques, Saks Fifth Avenue and museum gift shops. Write Comment (0 comments) MOSS AND STARCK COLLABORATION Starck's Kalashnikov table gun display at Moss in SohoOne of my favorite stores, Moss, is teaming up with Philippe Starck to open a shop-without-walls at the anticipated SLS at Beverly Hills Hotel. The space, called 'The Bazaar' will be conceptualized by Starck and will offer lounging, dining and shopping within the hotel's lobby. The co-founders of Moss, Franklin Getchell and Murray Moss, had initially turned down this project due to their opening of a Moss store in LA. But oddly, upon shopping for hotel lobby furniture Moss was an obvious choice to fit the aesthetic and the parnership was revived. Moss will contribute 30 vitrines of different shapes and sizes throughout the lobby, bar and dining area. We've seen nearly all of Starck's lobbies throughout the world and look forward to his uber-modern take on this space along with one of our fave furniture designers' contribution. Write Comment (0 comments) 2008 -THE YEAR OF PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS February will bring the star collaboration of Chloë Sevigny and Opening Ceremony which we thoroughly covered back when we saw the collection in Sept. and we now hear very mixed opinions of. My understanding of the concept is the same idea that spawns most collections to come to fruition -it is clearly an ode to Chloë's specific style. She's always seemed to get much accolade for the looks she pulls together but now that they are available for public consumption, there seems to be some confusion. Chloë's point of view is not for everyone...but neither is Tory Burch's -both are not meant to be. Clearly, the woman running to Opening Ceremony for high-waisted houndstooth shorts is in high contrast to the woman directing her driver to Nolita to hit Tory Birch for a $200 TB monogrammed towel for her weekend in the Hamptons. At first glance of the Chloë line one may think, 'that's something my Grandma would wear' and while I can certainly understand this, an open mind will re-interpret the story as one suitable for a certain type of girl to tell. It's fascinating when the general public loves something and when it becomes available to them they naysay just because they don't know what to do with it or how to wear it. We love and support this collaboration and will certainly be there to try on pieces that suit us and edit appropriately. I'm just somewhat stunned that this collab., very defining of downtown, is not getting more recognition and praise. Write Comment (0 comments) WHO ROCKED THE FROCK? This is our last who rocked the frock of ’07 –I’ve been sitting on this one for a little while as I think it is the funniest same-outfit scenario I've seen all year. That's right, your eyes are not deceiving you, it's Britney Spears vs. Sienna Miller ?! How the hell did these two end up in the same (See by Chloe) dress? I mean, we know the answer is their stylists, but Sienna's should be fired (Britney's should get a raise). Are Sienna’s days as style icon over (finally)? I’d say this photo certainly sets her back! Might I remind you that just last week Spears was dressed in a leopard mini tank dress -the hem of which was obviously hand-ripped and fishnets with holes throughout them and a hot pink bob-cut wig. She made hookers everywhere gasp in disgust! Oh, and this was her ensemble to go meet her paparazzi male-friend whom she asked to meet her at a hotel...late at night. In her defense, she is right smack in the middle of a total public meltdown....I just fear I'll be writing about her demise in my '08 summary... Write Comment (0 comments) LOSSES AND GAINS IN '07 FASHION We don't want to bring you down on a day meant for celebration, but 2007 did have some major losses in the fashion industry worth mentioning. Firstly, Isabella Blow -having discovered such designers as Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy, Blow had a style sense unparalleled by anyone. Her death was one of the reasons for Andre Leon Talley gaining back all his weight and a huge sadness fell over the entire industry...for the loss of Blow, not Talley gaining back his weight (which he's since lost again and discussed how in a recent issue of Vogue). One positive that came from Blow's death was Alexander McQueen's tribute fashion show which sent the crowd in appreciative ovation in Paris. The fashion world thought he might have been slipping as a result of his former show but they were reminded of why they love him so much with his S/S '08 collection. Even though she's not physically with us, Isabella Blow continues to inspire...and always will. John Galliano's right (and left) hand man, Steven Robinson, also passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack at age 38. Although a sad and tragic loss, it brought awareness to spectators outside the fashion industry that iconic fashion designers can't do it all on their own and depend heavily on a focused support team. Reading in all the fashion publications about the synergistic partnership between Galliano and Robinson made people feel a sense of loss for someone they never knew existed, yet inspired so much of what we equate Galliano's aesthetic to be. And finally, the death of Uruguayan model Eliana Ramos, which ultimately resulted from her anorexia nervosa (the same reason her sister, also a model, died just a few month prior), heated up the fashion industry's long-controversial preference for inhumanly thin models. The first ban on overly-thin models came from Madrid, Spain in Sept. of '06 and a few months later Milan issued the same ban and then the CFDA followed suit for the US. These bans were first enforced at the F/W '07 shows in February of 2007. Isabella Blow Steven Robinson Eliana Ramos Write Comment (0 comments) DOWNTOWN CHANGES IN '07 The ever-changing retail landscape of NYC never ceases and there were many openings and unfortunate closings of stores throughout '07. Let's just take one very specific example in the Meatpacking District. In just this past month, the northside of 14th street between 9th and 10th Ave. -no, lets scale that down even more, 9th and Washington, saw the closing of two great spots and the biggest store opening this year in NYC. The Little Pie Company, although still maintaining its outpost further uptown, is currently gutted and filled only with large men extracting the last of the kitchen supplies which churned out those delectable sweets. We always had to stop in and treat ourselves to a quick sugar boost before (and sometimes after) our long afternoons of spending way too much at Jeffrey and the DVF boutique (also opened in '07 on the same block, across the street). And just a couple of doors down was our coffee rejuvenating spot Bodum. In the last week this cafe and retail spot has been reduced to a mostly-empty retail space filled only with fashionistas clamoring at the coffee presses -which are now 80% off! I was there on Friday and there was still a good amount of items left but today is the LAST day so you better hurry. I scored the exact coffee press I had picked out online and when the cashier said the price I practically yelled '$4?!' to which the people on line behind me laughed. And of course, the biggest addition to this small little section of 14th is the Apple store on the corner. This opening saw thousands line up in anticipation hours before its 6pm opening on a cold, rainy Friday evening just a few weeks ago. The clear spiral staircase and well-appointed three-floor layout is all very impressive, but even as NYC's largest Apple store, it's still always super packed with customers and gawkers! We look forward to witnessing the changes in downtown NYC in '08! Apple Store -just after doors opened for first time Write Comment (0 comments) HAPPY NEW YEARS EVE DARLINGS! Well it's the most over-hyped party night of the year tonight and we hope you have fashionably fabulous plans to ring in 2008! Before we let 2007 go, we are feeling reminiscent and want to know what you think of style and fashion in '07. Most non-fashion oriented publications seem to be deeming it a year of embarrassing fashion. Please log into our fashion forum and let us know your thoughts. We hated the high-wasted pant which attempted to trend and failed -not before some fugly pants made their way onto Jessica Simpson and Mischa Barton though. We did have fun with the chunky jewelry, hat, and purple trends -and we've always loved our low-cut booties whether trending or not. We look forward to hearing your opinions and Happy New Years Eve! However, we hear Annie Leibovitz has reunited with the brand for a future campaign. I found amazing lifestyle boutiques, great restaurants and unique lounges with the best music always playing through speakers. Already famous for its film festival, Berlin is now standing out as a beacon for top fashion designers including Vivienne Westwood and Hugo Boss who showed at their Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week this past year. The upcoming Berlin Fashion Week, beginning January 27th, will feature designer extraordinaire Zac Posen who will show his Spring '08 collection (which we caught in Sept. in NY). It's a great move for both him and the city but he will certainly be quite tired after showing there and then running back to NY to present us with his F/W '08 collection! The bag is rather boxy and has a red interior appointed by Kate. The shoes will be vegan-friendly, much like Stella McCartney but at a cheaper price point around $200. We heart Natalie and her style but she did go off on a bit of a tirade last month about how she finds it 'annoying' that all people want to know at premieres is who she is wearing and not about the movie. Now, with her own line of shoes, she'll be hoping for that question more than ever so she can plug away! They will debut in February and we can't wait to see how it turns out! Does this indicate that he knows nothing about his wife -considering she admitted to the press back in 2005 that she'd never read an entire book in her life? No, not at all, he knows his wife perfectly -the book is the Valentino retrospective entitled, Valentino Garavani: First Name in Fashion. The book costs $1,500 and is a signed limited edition print. Oh, and it has lots and lots of pictures so she should be able to make it to the end. Here's hoping Posh!Write Comment (0 comments) THE RUMER RUMOR We hear Rumer Willis will be attending some select shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. As we saw her mom spotted in front rows this past fall, Rumer's presence makes sense as she will be taking stage as Ms. Golden Globe in a couple of weeks during the show. Another rumor that we will be informing our darlings of is that New York Fashion Week, beginning Feb. 1, will see more celebs than normal due to the writer's strike. What am I talking about? Well, it's a formula: because of the strike the red carpet will be toned way down and the 45% of celebs that stay only in the spotlight due to exposure on that little piece of red fabric will have to sit in the front rows of the shows to make up for lost photo ops in the press pages. Think about it, Lindsay, Nicole R., Rihanna... Britney...ha haa! Just kidding, like Britney has ever worn anything slightly fashionable in her life! Britney at fashion week is like Naomi Campbell interviewing Fidel Castro -completely useless. Write Comment (0 comments) GISELE THE DESIGNER? As we are well-aware, Gisele and the D&G boys are very much in bed together....no, even Gisele couldn't un-gay them, it's just a figure of speech. Well, as supermodel Kate Moss did for Topshop, Gisele will be designing a capsule collection for her buddies Dolce & Gabbana. Gisele has been romanced by many a designer to create a line but turned them all down for her two fave men -what a hag! It is a perfect pairing though as the pot will certainly turn up the bustiers and minis on the D&G racks a few notches! Write Comment (0 comments) NAOMI CAMPBELL THE JOURNALIST? Naomi Campbell, it seems, is trying on a new hat -no nothing by Treacy, as we are used to. Apparently, she is trying to gain credibility as a reporter. In October she had a meeting with Hugo Chavez who she interviewed for GQ magazine -this is an ongoing series of interviews she is planning for the publication. Currently, she is staging a coup in Cuba -no, not at all, but she is trying to score an interview will the illusive leader, Fidel Castro and we hear she is willing to do anything to do so -including spending Christmas with him! We don't know if she has gone this far but we do know that after Fidel, she is headed to France to interview President Sarkozy (I love that name). The only thing churning in my mind is whether this is going to turn out to be fluff or we will gain a whole new respect for Campbell. I really hope the latter -just imagine the kind of information the many professional and experienced journalists could have extracted from these political minds. I also don't know that they would be able to see past the gorgeous, long legs or take the experiences of a formerly cracked out supermodel serious. We'll soon see. But we discovered that, as of Dec. 23rd, the accessories line is available for purchase online. Unless you're just in the market to purchase for re-sale on Ebay, or something like that, I might not recommend this method. The reason being is that most of the items are made of synthetic materials and you would likely want to see, touch and smell to make sure they do not look even cheaper than they cost. So, if you still have a special man on your list to buy for, go with haste and snatch up as much from these coveted labels...while they are still available! Well, we've just learned that starting today, The Metropolitan Museum of Art store is having a 20-50% off sale on toys, sculpture reproductions and jewelry. Besides that, this is a great place to find something to enhance someones home! Who can't use a little more art in their life?Write Comment (0 comments) WHO ROCKED THE FROCK? DIANE KRUGER VS. JENA MALONE IN SONIA RYKIEL Write Comment (0 comments) THE SEASON OF PRINTS IS IN OUR NEAR FUTURE Prints are hard to wear - they always have been and always will be. I typically shy away from anything more than a basic stripe due to the fact that a statement print shouldn't be showcased more than once. There are always exceptions, of course, and this season, my vote belongs to Mociun. This Brooklyn-based label offers basic silhouettes with impressionistic graphic prints. While the design makes a bold statement, it offers a canvas (and an eco-friendly one at that) whereby one will become entranced by the interesting shapes and placement. This allows the wearer to keep his or her Mociun item ready for a second, third - hey, maybe even a thirtieth appearance. EXPANDING I've always been pretty open about my refusal to buy/wear American Apparel -but I've also always been well-aware that I stand alone on that one. As you've probably noticed for a while, there was that vacant space next door (on Orchard side) that nothing seemind to be happening with. It was only natural that AA would eat its way further down the block to increase their rackage for all those crowding the store. As of Friday, AA employees were seen unloading boxes from an AA truck into the space, also the phone records for the store at 199 Orchard have been switched from Big John (the last tenant) to AA -making it pretty official. Can't wait to see how they exploit underage naked women, create new ways for wannabes to waste time by sitting on a bench use the space.Write Comment (0 comments) REPETTO SAMPLE SALE Oddly, this sample sale is at a little lounge on first called Boucaro -apparently they'll host sample sales to get people through the door they pretend to be so tight about.
