Tristes tropiques

Transurbance

[walk] by Yaz “Transurbance is a mode of critical walking created by the [Italian] collective [Stalker].” write Danielle Wiley in Topia, the Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies. Here is the .pdf: A WALK ABOUT THE CITY: STALKER, THE TRANSURBANCE AND THE CITY MAP. It is a selected paper from Negotiating the Liminal: Moving Between and Beyond Boundaries, Barriers and Borderlands. 2008. Annual Graduate Student Conference hosted by the students in the Joint Programme in Communication and Culture, York and Ryerson Universities.Unlike the SI, de Certeau doesn’t reserve the revolutionary power of walking for the artist/activist. In The Practice of Everyday Life, he describes the everyday walking of citizens as a creative force. By redefining the urban fabric in relation to human action rather than economic exchange, walking converts the property value of urban space into use-value. To counter Foucault’s analysis of the omnipotence of the modern disciplinary society, de Certeau argues that “microbe-like” walkers swarm the urban fabric and infiltrate the networks of surveillance of the city. eco radio system

[inhabit] by Yaz Alright… A brand new installation at home… the heating system, the “eco radio system”, has replaced the older one (You know… you would see the fire of the boiler). All seems good, until you realize that when all lights are blinking… that means there is a problem that you can’t fix by yourself (At least when the fire was off, you would have a clue about what to do). Now you have to call a specialist… The situation talks about the meta_architecture of storage spaces that accompanies technological home improvements. Also… few links concerning intelligent homes (Info via Archistorm issue #34):The Philips Research… HomelabThe Dombox of Delta Dore: .pdfThe software Domovea by Hager + MicrosoftIn One de Legrand No Comments » 2008-12-21

Terre Natale

[attend] by Yaz A MUST NOT MISS if you are in Paris… At the Cartier Foundation/ Raymond Depardon - Paul Virilio, Terre Natale : Ailleurs commence ici… For Virilio, “Les sédentaires, ceux qui sont partout chez eux, dans le TGV, et les nomades, ceux qui sont nulle part chez eux (Les réfugiés)“… Though traditional nomads, follow the same path (Seasonal migrations). Lots to discuss, especially in light of my neo-nomad research… The Cartier Foundation commissioned a great visualization… designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro & Mark Hansen, Laura Kurgan & Ben Rubin… and illustrating Virilio’s words on the dynamic of migrations, the flow of people and cash, political and environmental refugees.  No Comments » 2008-12-21

Bonaparte et l’Egypte

[attend] by Yaz It became a ritual, each time I am in Paris, I go to the IMA. Their exhibits are always well informed! 169 scientists came with ”Le petit caporal” (NB: then commandant des French, chief of the expedition) to document Egypt. Already, Bonaparte used Media (Paintings) to assert his power, abandonned the troups in 1799 because of pressing elections in France… France lost terribly in Egypt, yet Bonaparte used scientific discoveries to win politically. War machine. It is the time of Egyptomania, Orientalism… Got to see objects carried by scientist and doctors during the military campaign.
