2 years ago today... posted by daisy janie : scoutie girl ... i was writing the first post on scoutie girl! happy 2nd anniversary old lady! what a whirlwind, too! i can say, without a doubt, i would not be on the happy path i'm on were it not for the connections i've made, the fabulous art & design i've been exposed to, the meaningful conversations i've had, the comments i've enjoyed reading and the friends i've made along the way! thank you to everyone who checks in here to see what we've dug up - and an even bigger thank you to those who click thru & show their support by purchasing the artists' lovely handmade items! Milkshakecrafts in a cool bit of fun coincidence, my first real post was about my friend Lisa Kelley (who you know here as lisa {milkshake}. she and i met when we exchanged links for our websites about 3 years ago! we stayed in touch via email - discussing the finer points of how to take your business to the next level and the challenges & thrills of parenting an only child. she was the first guest poster for scoutie girl - with her amazing sense of style & design, i knew she'd be a perfect fit! see lisa's work: milkshake crafts and milkshakecrafts at etsy here we are in 2009, and Lisa and i are heading off to printsource in NYC next week, where we'll be sharing a booth to show/sell our surface designs to the trade. so exhilarating and nerve-wracking all at once. as you can see above, Lisa's hand-sketched motifs make incredibly balanced & refreshing patterned designs. fingers crossed that we both do well - we'll be across the aisle from talented artists jess gonacha and samantha hahn. can't wait to meet everyone in person! posting will be slim here next week - but i'll be back with vengeance on the 19th! wish us luck! posted on January 8, 2009 in graphic design , home decor , illustration | painting , lisa {milkshake} , paper goods | Permalink | Comments (4) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: handmade cards, handmade clocks, illustrated patterns * featuring ingrid art studio * posted by daisy janie : scoutie girl Shop ingrid art studio for etched, illustrated, encausted, inked, linocut and photographed mixed media visual art (in as many products, too). Provoking studies in form. handmade solutions #7 [outfitting a bathroom with artwork] posted by lori (aka: marzi) Banner_green [outfitting a bathroom with artwork] we recently (and by recently i mean over the last year and a half) have remodeled our main bathroom. we gutted it down to the studs and started over. it's been a long, long process with a lot of issues along the way. we're just about finished.....just need to finish up some trim work and then decorate. i've been contemplating what i'm going to do for artwork. since it's a bathroom, it gets really damp and humid after showers even with the fan running, so i hesitate to use framed artwork that could warp or get damaged. then i had a brilliant idea! what if i used vinyl art decals? so i went on a search. the area i need to fill is tall and narrow. i also wanted something a little more organic because the bathroom is very modern and i wanted to add a touch of softness to it. here are my favorites: Decalmosaic i found all of these great designs at elly nelly's shop on supermarket. they're all available in multiple colors and they range from $35 - $45 each. i think these may be just the thing i was looking for!  posted on January 7, 2009 in $25-50 , graphic design , handmade solutions , home decor , lori {marzipan} | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: bathroom wall art, vinyl art decals link mini: fabric-covered thumbtacks posted by daisy janie : scoutie girl Mini_fabricfarrago $6.50 from fabric farrago (sooooooo many fabrics to choose from) posted on January 7, 2009 in $25 or less , home decor , link mini | Permalink | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: fabric covered thumbtacks circles in clay posted by lisa {milkshake} Ts The circle represents many things - the sun, the moon, love, the cycle of life. They were so clever and sweet and funky. I have been coveting one ever since. I love her work and detail and just had to chat with her about her creations. Il_430xN.47244411 Can you describe yr art and process? Tell us a bit about yrself? When I was 6 or 7 I started sewing really ugly clothes for my Barbie doll and then my mom taught me to sew with a machine. I went to school for fashion, and I work full time in the apparel industry, and since I was working with clothes every day, I got out of sewing for a while. But then, my step-daughter wanted me to make some clothes for her dolls, and that helped to reignite my interest in sewing. Since I still didn't want to play with grown-up clothes I ended up making some purses for myself, and then my friends wanted some, and I thought, hey maybe some other people might some of these as well! My design aesthetic has always been a little quirky, which is why in school I focused on costume design - where you can be a quirky as you want to be. Our entire house has become my studio: in our spare room I have a sewing machine that I sew all my leather on, I keep my leather stash in the bedroom, I have another sewing machine in the kitchen, a serger the hallway and a holdable cutting table in the living room. Fortunately I also have a super supportive husband! So- Can you just tell me a few things that inspire you? And how you work- yr process? Oh man, I feel like everything can inspire me. =) My husband is a photographer so I'll get inspired by his images and his eye all the time. I'll use music, movies or books to help find ideas, or even seasons (oh how I wish I had time to make Christmas ornaments this year....) Sometimes I'll be out and see an album cover with a rabbit on it and suddenly I'm like "that's it!" and I'm off to create my next project. Sometimes custom work has inspired me to branch out into additional products, or really any interaction I have with customers gets my brain moving. I start with a rough sketch of my idea, and form there I draft a pattern. My patterns are made on card stock, and I'll then trace around these on the leather. I'll then cut everything out and start sewing. I try to make things in batches, 4 owls here, a couple of clutches there. I keep the batches small so I can complete them in a short time period and feel like I've accomplished something. Whenever I try a new product I'll make a couple and see how they do. On my blog, when I was making totes, I posted pics taking readers through the process. Il_430xN.45455893 I want to know some things about what is it really like to be a working artist...the good and the bad? What are the three top things you wish you would have known before youstarted this art/etsyjourney? The good is definitely creative freedom. While I love custom orders, there's the joy that comes from experimenting with new products or new designs. You also have the freedom to set your own pace. In many ways, especially with Etsy, you have control over how much business you have. The bad - stress! I try to be as organized as possible, but before a big show, or the Christmas season, it's hard not to get stressed out worrying if everything will get done in time. However, you are setting your own limits, so perhaps this show will have a little less stock, and would it really be the worse thing ever? Before starting I wish I had done a little more research into suppliers. I started the business with leftover leather from my school days. That leather is now long gone, and it's been trial and error to find suppliers that I like to do business with, as well as finding the right leathers. When I started my Etsy shop I sold jewelry, so it was a good place for me to have some trial and error and learn to how to promote my business. Learning the ins and outs of Etsy and self-promotion is definitely something that takes time to research - but well worth knowing! I also think, before jumping head first into my shop, I should have set it up as an in stock business from the get-go. Originally all my product was made to order, and I think that discouraged some people since they couldn't visualize a particular purse in a specific color. With the Internet you need to hold the hand of your customer as much as possible, it's the only way to build a relationship with them. What are yr five top blogs/shops/etc on web?Who would you love to meet online? I love my husband's blog (obviously): www.tsururadio.com - he has great taste in music, and is always introducing me to new bands. As for other blogs I love Pajiba for movie reviews, and LOL cats for my daily stress reliever. Shop-wise, I love ModCloth and the Curiosity Shoppe -- I've picked up some great Christmas gifts at both places (as well as stuff for myself). As for who to meet on-line, I was really happy I joined up with Etsy Team Columbus. Setting up shop on your own can be a lonely place, and with the team I was able to meet other crafters, share horror stories, and help each other out. It's a really great group of people, and another great source for Christmas gifts! Thank you so much! I love love love her clutches! I know one will be mine in 2009! Rock on  and check out her site and blog! - - - - - - - - - -Have a great day and feel free to email me at amytsharp (at) gmail (dot) com with cool finds on Etsy for me to scope out! posted on January 6, 2009 in accessories , amy {little alouette} , brief introductions , handbags , sewn | Permalink | Comments (2) | TrackBack (0) Technorati Tags: handmade clutches, handmade handbags

Then & Now - Yasmin Bochi posted by vadjutka - an interview with Yasmin Bochi by Judit Wild - Here we have a real explorer: Yasmin from Yasminbochi creates bags and jewelry, and she is moving consantly. She believes that an artist should never get used to a certain technique, and should always search for something new. And she does: as a self-taught jewelry maker she started with resin jewelry, and now she plans to move forward art clay.  When did you start making jewelry? Why did you choose this medium?  I started making jewellery in 2005. I have always been into fashion and accessories and I love to have matching pieces. After working with bags and clothing for a while, I decided to add a jewellery collection to go along my other designs. Yasmin-bochi2005 You make bags and clothes as well. Where is the place of jewelry making in your crafting life? At this point it has become my main focus in my creative process. I love making bags and clothing, but they take a lot of time and energy as I change my mind quite often whilst creating. It can take a few months before I'm satisfied with the look of a handbag. For me, jewellery is quicker way to express myself. My jewellery pieces are the miniature versions of what I am doing with my handbags and clothing. It is a fun distraction when I'm getting frustrated with my other work and need a break. How do you evaluate the change between your first piece and the works you do now concerning jewelry? In what way did your style change, and why?I don't think my style has changed a lot since then, but I do spend more time thinking about how to work out a design. At first I was more interested in the experiment of making jewellery and wasn't too concerned with the final result. I like quirky and unusual themes and I will only create jewellery that I would wear myself. It might not be to everyone's taste, but that doesn't bother me. I feel more enthousiastic and inspired to create a piece that I really love  rather than making mainstream designs.  Which area do you think you evolved a lot? I am self-taught and at first it was hard to find out what I wanted, and how I could make it. I have spent hours and hours on line looking for tutorials and information about jewellery making and use of materials. One of the first tutorials I found was about resin jewellery and being over-confident I decided to give it a go. It isn't exactly the easiest jewellery style to start with for someone who's completely new to jewellery making, but fortunately it turned out great and I absolutely fell in love with this medium. With a lot of trial and error and experimenting I have learned a lot, and I have moved on from buying molds to making my own, and taking my ideas one step further. I love to learn new things and I'm not afraid to make mistakes. I think this is very important for an artist: explore and expand your possibilities and do not stick to what you already know. After getting used to working with resin I found other ways to turn my imagination into reality by using other mediums, like polymer clay and organic materials like cypress cones and sea shells.  Yasmin-bochi2008 You use a lot of matroyshka, and other types of faces in your jewelry. How did you end up using dolls in your works?  I graduated in art history and I am fascinated by how people have been using art over centuries and centuries to express themselves. I love folklore and traditions and I want to preserve these histories by making them my own, and let them inspire me in my own art.  My collection of matryoshka dolls always put me in a good mood and therefore it is one of my favourite themes. The Mirror Mirror on the Wall collection is the darker interpretation of the well-known Snow White story, I like a bit of mystery and drama. For each of my moods I create a different atmosphere, a different background to build on. I'm a big fan of vintage and early to mid 20th century glamour and even if I can't really relate to those past era's as I was only born in the 80's, I love to re-create the feeling of that faded glamour, long lost elegance and beauty but with an up-to-date twist to it. What kind of evolution do you see for yourself necessary in the future? What are your plans (if any)?I'm always looking for the next new thing, trying to find a way to move up and push beyond my limits. At the moment I'm very interested in Art Clay and how I could make use of this in my designs. When I try a new technique I want to find as many uses for it as I can. For example, I use the same image transfer technique for both my polymer clay designs designs as my fabric creations. And now I am experimenting with furniture. I want to turn old and used up pieces into something completely different and unique, using paints, decoupage, image transfers and my own art work. I think, what I am really looking for is, to create a lifestyle that combines all the different aspects of my creative process into one. I don't know if I'll ever succeed, but I'm having a lot of fun trying so far.
