49Sparks - Thoughts, Observations and Opinions from Chris Ritke   HomeAbout & Contact How do you market that thingy?Subscribe: RSS   I commented on a post to hacker news a few days ago. Loads of fun. Somebody asked How do you generate passive income? Very interesting question I thought. So I responded: online with http://uploadthingy.com - not totally passive - new users sometimes need some help - but once they're subscribed - well, they're subscribed. And then someone asked:There are a billion and a half different 'upload' sites out there. How do you market? So how do you market that thingy?Well, it's Adwords darn it. I've tried all kinds of stuff. Trial and error. Iterate. Check the ROI. And what won? Adwords. With the right keywords of course.Adwords? That's it?No. Don't be silly. Even though Adwords has the best ROI (for now, at least) - the real deal is what happens when somebody actually clicks on an Adwords link and ends up at uploadthingy. That's when it counts. Because the site is built so that they have a chance to understand what it's about. How it can ease their pain. And way up at the top it says Contact us at hello@uploadthingy.com - we'd love to hear from you! And contact us is what they do. And what do I do? I respond. Right away. Answer questions. Get it to work for them. Listen to what they're saying. And if they ask for an enhancement - well - I listen, think and decide. If it makes sense for what I think uploadthingy is about I give them credit, thank them and build it. ASAP.No. Adwords is not itWhy? Because it costs money. So I'm working on SEO. And it's gaining traction. But you know what really bugs the heck out of me? That no one has blogged about it yet That only one person has blogged about it. That's the holy grail. You know that. So do I. And I can't ask people to blog about it. And I sure as heck can't pay them. The secret sauce is interacting with people - on their blogs, discussion sites, twitter.... after all the mechanical SEO stuff, actually talking to people is the real SEO. And it's fun - not just when they blog about it - but just interacting with and learning from them. Soooo...It's pretty clear to me that I really don't have this stuff figured out yet. That's what's so good about writing. When you're thinking about stuff things usually somehow seem to make sense. Writing it down really shows what's missing or probably wrong. And that means that this is not the last post on this subject!posted by chris ritke on Jan 08, 2009 • permanent link If you came this far reading this, you might want to grab my RSS feed, right?! Comments Jem says... I think you're approaching it from the wrong angle, but unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it now. You've built your product, and now you're trying to interact with people to market it. I would always recommend interacting with people first - almost when you've got no ulterior motive - and THEN pushing the product. People are more inclined to then think about how they can help you because they like you, rather than 'what is he getting out of it?'That said, building a little 'home' in a community for yourself is not as easy as I make it sound. I think the only reason I succeed in getting traffic and visitors is because I've been doing this for 8 years.posted on Jan 08, 2009 Your Name *: Your Website URL: (Example: www.myblog.com) Your Comment *: Enter number shown in box below *: Previous Posts Backup with 2 drives, TrueCrypt, AlwaySync and a carposted on Jan 07, 2009 Clickable checkbox labels.
