While I hope that it is more than a passing trend, 'design' has recently become a major consideration in the general public lifestyle in the US. Just take a look around at your local newsstand and how many magazines address 'the modern life', where high design permeates every aspect of one's life, down to who designed the stapler on your desk that you never use. Have you ever encountered a thing that has design-iness? Something that was packaged as well designed, but did not actually live up to its brand/marketing image? It looks like bouldering, leading and top-roping are all possible on the nine-story tall, 87 unit dormitory. I like that the facade has a program, something that would be impossibly difficult to do in the US. According to his website, "The idea was to create a series of iconic images that can bridge between languages, are easy to grasp and, when done well, also nice to look at." Gerd lived in communist Germany and Russia, so it's interesting to see how that played into his icons.
