Art is Not About Talent

Thursday January 8, 2009Art and talent Quit worrying if you've got any artistic talent or not. That's not the question you should be asking. Artist Jerry Fresia explains in his new article Art is Not About Talent. "Talent is a dirty word because it assumes that only a few are able when it is quite the reverse. Now, this is not to say that some people are not blessed with abilities that others don't have. Nor is it to say that if I were to judge someone's work, I would not draw conclusions about the work being, at least to me, lousy or pretty good."Rather it is to say that we are born as creative, daring creatures. All of us. Each of us possesses all the natural gifts that we tend to assume are the province of only a talented few." It doesn't take talent to turn paint squeezed out on a palette into an image on a canvas. What it takes is for you to respond to the urge to do so. Read Jerry's full article here... I'm sure you're going to enjoy it as much as you've enjoyed his previous articles on the more philosophical side of learning to paint, including these: • The Real Reason We Paint • Pretend You Are Dancing a Painting • Art Can Be Taught Image: © Jerry FresiaComments (1)Permalink

Color Chart Mess

Wednesday January 7, 2009Color Mixing Art Worksheet Take a tube of napthol red medium (PR170), a tube of phtahlo green blue shade (PG7), and a color mixing worksheet. Stir with a small filbert brush by an artist whose attention isn't totally on the task due to the threat of a young cat's curiosity causing chaos and it being a new paint, and you've a recipe for a color chart mess. In theory, it should work fine: dab a dash of each color into each section, then mix together on the paper, and spread around the block. In practice, with my attention diverted, the paint dried before I was done and I had to start again. Next time I will:(1) Close the door to keep said kitty out, and (2) Paint a layer of medium on the page first so the acrylic doesn't absorb into the paper so rapidly, and thus will dry more slowly giving more mixing time. The other option, and some would say the most sensible, would of course be to mix the colors on a palette first... but some days I don't feel like being sensible. W&N Acrylic Samples

Tuesday January 6, 2009Winsor Newton Artists' Acrylics Updated Thurs 8th: Bad news I'm afraid if you're wanting a sample of the new Winsor & Newton Artists' Acrylics or to enter their competition. Some gremlins have got into the W&N website and scrambled things, so it's been taken offline while the techies work on solving the problem. Arty Fun from A to Z

Tuesday January 6, 2009Book Review A to Z Treasure Hunt by Alice Melvin A to Z Treasure Hunt is marketed as being for kids but as we all know this doesn't mean the rest of us can't have fun with it too. Creative fun in this instance, themed from A to Z. Each page has something to do involving finding an object, sticking something in, or painting something. Whether you follow the activity to the letter (sic) or not is, of course, an artistic choice. Will you stick a bandage on Humpty Dumpty's head or paint him one? This is what will make a completed A to Z different for everyone. Read my review... See Also: • Art ABC and First Concepts Books for Kids • The Guerilla Art Kit Photo © Marion Boddy-Evans.
